TREND PATTERNS FACE MASK SEWING DIRECTIONS
The Outer Mask:
1. Sew the 2 outer layers together.
a. Pin them together to make it easier to sew.
b. Stitch close to the edge, the machine foot width for example.
c. Repeat for both sides.
2. Sew the nose dart.
a. After sewing, snip into the dart seam to the end point. This will make it easier to press open and reduce bulk.
3. Pin the lower chin panel along the bottom edge, right sides of fabric together.
a. Match the notches that indicate the end of the chin panel.
b. This edge is quite curved so make sure you’re matching the edges.
c. Sew the two pieces together.
d. Snip v’s into the seam allowance.
e. Press the seam allowance down towards the lower edge.
4. Trim away some of the seam allowance to reduce bulk.
The Lining:
5. Press the back the 1 cm seam allowance on both the center and side pieces.
a. Overlock, or double turn for a clean finish. I’m leaving it raw for speed.
b. Sew the pressed down allowances in place.
6. Overlap the side and center pieces, matching the notches. Pin in place. Stitch the overlaps together. The gusset entry is formed.
7. Sew the nose dart. Snip open as with the outer mask. Press the gusset opening and dart.
8. Sew the lining chin panel to the lower edge of the lining, right sides together, pinning the right sides together first.
a. Snip the seam and press down towards the lower edge as you did with the outer layer.
Bagging out or Binding: two methods of finishing
Bagging Out:
9. Line up the right sides of the outer layer and lining together. Pin the two layers together.
a. Put a pin at the end of the chin panel so you know where to pivot your stitching.
b. Sew the two layers together, but only along the top and bottom edges of the mask.
c. On the lower edge, when you come to the chin panel start point, pivot and continue along the chin panel.
10. Snip into the curves along the top and the corners where the chin panel meets the main panel of the mask and snip away any bulk.
a. Turn through to the right way.
11. Press along the top and bottom bagged out edge.
a. Overlock the ends.
Binding the Edges
12. With the wrong sides facing each other, pin together along the edges.
a. Put a pin at the start and end of the chin panel.
b. Then finish be pinning the chin panels together
13. Sew along the top and bottom edges, with 1 cm seam allowance
a. Pivot at the chin panel corners and follow along the bottom edge of the chin panel
14. Trim away the seam allowance as close to the row of stitching as possible
15. Bind the edges: binding is narrow (3 cm) so use a very small seam allowance, the width of the machine foot.
a. Line up the edge of binding with the edge of the mask
b. Sew close to the edge.
c. Trim ends to match mask ends.
d. Press binding away from the mask.
e. Fold the binding in so the raw edges meet.
f. Then fold the binding in half to sit over the mask edge.
g. Sink stitch the binding in place.
h. Keep checking your binding is sitting in place underneath
i. Repeat on the other edge.
16. Overlock Both Ends of the Mask – Both versions – use a machine overlock stitch to sew shut both ends.
17. The Elastic
a. Loop the elastic, overlapping at the ends, and stitch ends together, using a square pattern if possible
b. Place the elastic in line with the edge of the sewn edge of the mask, on the inside of the mask.
c. Turn the sewn edge of the mask over the line of elastic.
d. Sew the edge of the mask down over the elastic, but don’t sew the elastic.
e. Repeat for the other side.
